New Living, a green building and home store in Rice Village, has launched a commercial division targeting commercial architects and builders.

“One of the biggest challenges to green building is educating builders and showing them how to use the materials,” New Living founder Jeff Kaplan said.

Contractors, he said, sometimes unknowingly combine environmentally safe products with toxic adhesives or stains.

Part of the new venture, called Pro New Living, is to educate contractors about the products and processes through training seminars and to assist builders in determining what products earn extra points toward green building certification.

Kaplan started New Living two years ago, selling products on one aisle of the Wagner Hardware store at 6111 Kirby.

The green retailer eventually took over the entire store and had its grand opening in July.

In addition to its new commercial services, the store sells nontoxic paints, flooring carpet and countertops, as well as organic mattresses and bedding and toxic-free cleaning products.
